Richelle Drake, B.A, C.L.T. – L.A.N.A.,

Richelle is a nationally certified Lymphedema Therapist practicing in Los Angeles, specializing in Manual Lymph Drainage and Complex Decongestive Therapy. She works primarily with cancer survivors who have developed lymphedema, most often appearing as a chronically swollen arm or leg as a result of lymph node dissection or radiation. Her technique is a gentle, non-invasive manipulation of lymphatic fluid followed by bandaging and specific rehabilitative exercises. Her treatment goal is to reduce excess swelling, reduce risk of infection and restore quality of life.

Ms. Drake was trained and certified by the Dr. Vodder School of Manual Lymph Drainage in Austria in 1993 and brought her knowledge and experience to the UCLA Medical Center, where she established a Lymphedema Program among a team of physical therapists. For over 5 years, Richelle worked in the UCLA Rehabilitation Services Department as the Senior Lymphedema Therapist. While on staff, she conducted inservices on lymphedema to groups of oncologists, radiologists and surgeons. Clinically, she's treated hundreds of lymphedema sufferers.

Advanced training in other parts of the world with renownedLymphologists furthered Richelle's professional skills. She traveled to Australia in 1995 to study with the Drs. John and Judith Casley-Smith, who pioneered a physiotherapy approach differing from the European model. The Casley-Smith Method greatly impacted Richelle's work because of its inclusion of self-massage instruction as an integral part of treatment. After years of mentoring under Dr. Judith Casley-Smith, Richelle developed a Self Care Program Booklet of exercise and self-massage that is used to empower patients in lymphedema management as well as prevention.
